Alexandra Palace opened in 1873 but was destroyed in a fire two weeks after opening. It was later reopened in 1875 as an arts centre. It was used at the first television centre in 1936, and was the main transmitter up until 1956. For many years the venue was used as an exhibition centre until 1980 when it caught alight again and was closed for eight years. An ice rink was built on the grounds in 1990 and now the palace holds occasional events throughout the year, the highlight being its annual fireworks display.
