The Roundhouse is a former railway engine shed that was built in 1847. It was used as a warehouse up until the Second World War when it fell into disrepair and then later refurbished as an arts centre under the name 'Centre 42'. During this period some historic concerts were held there, including The Doors’ only UK gig, plus performances by Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, and the Rolling Stones. Centre 42 closed in 1983 and was reopened in 1996 as the Roundhouse. Since 2006, after it was refurbished once again, it has hosted the BBC Electric Proms, and has a variety of music, theatre, art and digital media events happening throughout the year.
