The Royal Albert Hall was built in memory of Queen Victoria’s husband in 1871. It was built in celebration of arts and science, and the large mosaic running outside the building commemorates this fact. The hall hosts a variety of events each year, from classical to pop concerts, and sporting events and talks. Since 1941 it has held the BBC Proms, and it also holds the annual Festival of Remembrance. The venue had notorious acoustic problems up until 1969 when distinctive large discs were attached to the ceiling to resolve the problem, and it also is home to the second-largest organ in the UK with 9,999 pipes. A range of stars have played at the hall including Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and more recently Jay-Z. It was also a favourite of Winston Churchill’s for his wartime speeches.
