Somerset house was built by Sir William Chambers between 1776 and 1796. It has been used for a variety of purposes and has been home to many learned societies – it still houses King’s College’s music department. For 150 years the building was the main hub for England and Wales’ Birth, Marriage and Death certificates until 1987, when they were transferred to the National Archive. It is now a centre for art and culture and holds regular exhibitions. During the winter months a large ice rink is installed in the courtyard, and during the summer concerts and films are shown.
